Andrea’s inclination towards painting and drawing started from an early age, when she produced numerous life size paper masks with idealized beautiful faces to strap on. Her passion was also to collect paper napkins out of a love for fine papers and fascinated by the artful arrangement of images in a square.
During her high school years she rejected being taught by her art teacher and opted instead to paint at home on a small easel, producing paintings in oil, pastel and watercolours. As a 17-year-old, she was very influenced by painters like Paul Klee (his style of abstraction, sign language and coloring, which she found very feminine), Emil Nolde (she loved his expressive watercolors), Paula Modersohn Becker (her portraits and especially a self-portrait with a chain) and Van Gogh, whose life fascinated her because painting was a necessity for him.
Going on to study art after high school was a natural choice. She was accepted at the Academy of Art and Industrial Design, Linz on a foundational course where she also attended life-drawing classes.
Andrea went on to study painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna as well as gaining a teacher training degree in Art and Craft/Design/Technology.
The museums and cultural scene in Vienna were a font of knowledge and experience in art history. Her dissertation was written on 'Art in Russia and the Soviet Union in the years 1917-21'. She identified strongly with the art of Malevich, El Lissitsky and Stepanova and the new artistic concept of abstraction.
After completing her studies in Vienna, Andrea moved to London. She opened her first studio, later moved with other artists to a bigger studio in West London. This was the beginning of a very active period of painting. Exhibitions followed in London, Linz, Sarajevo, Cairo, Damascus with art residencies in Italy, the Czech Republic and Austria.
Andrea went on to do a masters degree in Hypermedia Studies at the University of Westminster, collaborating with programmers and other artists on projects.
She also studied on a degree course in Textile Design/Print at Central Saint Martins to link her interests in painting, printing and digital design.
Her work is experimental, playing with the format of canvas and paper and exploring abstract expressions. She says “Looking at a myriad of forms and rhythms I discern patterns, relationships, proportions and growing formula. Like a code breaker, I am discovering the balance, harmony and symmetry of everything around me.”
